MATRIX and TRACES
THE WORKS EXISTS IN TWO STATES:
– The ‘MATRIX’, as a silent structure of absence,
– The ‘TRACE’, as its positive echo.
My work unfolds within the tension between planning and spontaneity. I draw geometric structures on canvas or paper, then cut into the surface, interrupting its continuity and transforming it into a stencil.
This cut surface becomes the matrix. Defined by openings and absences, the matrix is not emptiness in opposition to form, but emptiness as form itself. It is a silent structure in which negative space becomes active, generating rhythm, balance, and instability.
When the matrix is placed onto another support, color is allowed to pass through. Applied with an airbrush, pigment settles softly onto the surface, revealing the imprint of what is missing. From this gesture, two interconnected works emerge: the matrix, bearing the memory of subtraction, and the imprint, its visible resonance. I call these works Disorienting Traces.
My process is informed by natural systems and by archaeological and architectural structures—forms shaped by time, erosion, and absence. These references are not illustrated but absorbed into a method that unfolds gradually, without a predetermined outcome.
Emptiness lies at the core of my practice. Color becomes its manifestation, oscillating between positive and negative, presence and absence. Meaning is not explained but suspended, allowing the viewer to encounter the work intuitively.
The most fragile moment is knowing when to stop. There is no fixed point of arrival—only a subtle decision guided by sensibility. When the work begins to destabilize me, I know it is complete.
